Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Objectives:: The aim of the course is to present the main positions of early modern philosophy up to Kant.Content: Early modern thought points the way for the later development of modern discourse. Breaking with late medieval Aristotelianism and in confrontation with the emerging modern natural sciences, it sought a new justification and structuring of knowledge. In the process, both new metaphysical interpretations of nature and new perspectives on human beings and their socio-political conditions emerge. The lecture traces this process by looking at some selected philosophical approaches. It draws an arc from Francis Bacon through rationalism (Descartes, Leibniz, Spinoza), mechanical materialism (Hobbes, La Mettrie), and empiricism (Hume) to Kant. In addition, we will also take a look at some of the women philosophers who appear in increasing numbers in the early modern period.Method: Each session will consist of 70 minutes of lecture and 20 minutes for questions and discussion.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam of 90 minutes without any aids.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum requirement: A score of at least 50% of the achievable 25 points in the written exam.
