Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture gives an introduction into the application areas of Computer Science at the University Vienna: Bioinformatik, Medieninformatik, Mediziniformatik, Scientific Computing und das Studium der Wirtschaftsinformatik. Students write a motivation report and participate in the peer-reviewing process. To get an overiew of all available subjects the attendance is mandatory.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students reflect about the presentations and write a report about that application area, which they plan to choose in their further studies. Details will be presented in the lectures. In addition students participate in the peer-review. The evaluation of the course consists of the peparation of an report, the attendance in the course and the completion of the peer reviews.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students get an overview of the different application areas of Computer Science at the University Vienna. Main goal is to help the students to make the right decision for that application area in which they are interested in.

For a positive evaluation of the course the following tasks need to be completed by students:
A) Submit written report
B) Peer review on 2 reports of colleagues

For these two tasks deadlines will be announced in the course, which have to be strictly obeyed. The adherence to the deadlines will be checked via the learning platform. Submissions of reports or peer-reviews which are too late lead to a negative evaluation of the course.

The evaluation of the reports by the course instructors account for 70% of the grade, the two peer reviews each for 15%. The scale of the grades is 1 (Sehr Gut), 2 (Gut), 3 (Befriedigend), 4 (Genügend), 5 (Nicht Genügend). For a positive evaluation at least 50% have to be reached.

In addition the attendance during the course is mandatory. Students who cannot register on time due to delays in the admisssion procedure of University of Vienna can only take part according to the decision of the course instructors. In this case the course instructors may demand an additional peer review to be completed.

Examination topics

Presentation of the different application areas. The presentations will be made freely available to the students on the elearning platform.
