The first session serves as an orientation, an introduction to the structure and organization of the course and the work to be done by the students. Upon request and after consultation with all enrolled students, the seminar can be held in English.
In addition, should this facilitate participation, there is also the possibility of changing the date of the seminar.
Although this is a reading course that deals with Tibetan translation literature from Sanskrit and is therefore primarily aimed at students of Tibetan, all those interested in Buddhist studies who have so far mainly studied Sanskrit are also welcome. Students of both Tibetan and Sanskrit can see this course as an extension of their respective specializations.

Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
There are no restrictions regarding the permitted sources or aids. It is recommended to follow the reading as selected for the seminar. Furthermore, the usual rules for the preparation of scientific papers must of course be observed.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
In order to pass the seminar, at least 50% of the total points must be achieved. Regular attendance is also required. The reading of the lectures, as indicated for the respective sessions, is obligatory and a prerequisite for active participation in the seminar.The grading system is structured as follows:

To this end, we will deal with the translation of one of the most central works of Indian Buddhism, the BCA of Santideva, transmitted in Tibetan as Byang chub sems dpa'i spyod pa la 'jug pa, probably better known under its short title Spyod 'jug. In particular, although knowledge of Sanskrit is desirable but not required, we will regularly include editions of the Sanskrit text in the lessons in order to gain a better understanding of the Tibetan translation as well as to be able to evaluate it critically.
The methods include above all grammatical analysis skills and the acquisition of knowledge about the equivalents of Sanskrit expressions and syntactic structures in the language of classical Tibetan as it was used in canonical literature (chos skad).
Furthermore, various resources relevant to translation literature will of course be discussed, such as dictionaries, grammars, as well as various databases and online tools.
Also, at least implicitly, since the BCA has been translated several times into different languages, there will be an examination of secondary literature and translation strategies. Last but not least, we will also gather first impressions of the genre of commentary literature by making short excursions into the commentary of Prajñākaramati, at least in some relevant places.
