Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course presents an overview of the field of psycholinguistics, the study of the cognitive processes that underlie linguistic behaviour. The course emphasizes the role of communicative efficiency in natural language, that is articulatory and planning effort on the part of the speaker, transmission between speaker and listener through a noisy channel, and perceptual factors and processing on the part of the listener.

Assessment and permitted materials

Student progress will be evaluated through a short term paper. The short term paper will enable the student to explore a topic of his/her choice in greater depth. Students will be free to write term papers in either German or English.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

No prior background in psycholinguistics is assumed.

Examination topics

There will be no exams in this class, only a final term paper.

Reading list

Students will read original papers from the psycholiguistics literature.
