Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Elementary concepts of linear algebra: matrices, linear spaces, bases, etc. For details see
"Studienplan". Together with "analysis" linear algebra is the indispensable basis for any further study of mathematics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Colloquia (written examinations) at the end of the term and subsequently three times per term for some period of time

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Starting with geometrial reasoning the basic concepts of linear algebra will be derived. Now (and even more in the future terms) we will exhibit their applicability astonishing variety of areas inside and outside mathematics which nobody would have guessed in the beginning.

Examination topics

the good old lecture (questions and remarks welcome!)

Reading list

Herbert Muthsam: Lineare Algebra und ihre Anwendungen. Elsevier (2006)
Dieses Buch liegt in namhaftem Ausmaß der Vorlesung zu Grunde

Peter D. Lax: Linear Algebra (english).
Setzt schon einige Kenntnisse voraus, daher nicht zu Beginn, aber im Laufe der Zeit interessant.

M. Köcher: Lineare Algebra und analytische Geometrie
Eine Darstellung im traditionellen Stil
