If you want to participate in this course, it is necessary for you to attend the preparatory meeting (i.e. the first unit at October 13 at 8:00 a.m.) on time! It will take place on-site in PC-Seminarraum 2. Students not attending this meeting are un-registered from the course and replaced by attendant students from the waiting list.
The preparatory meeting and the introductory talk on March 3, 2023, will be on-site in Hörsaal 11. At this time, the students will vote on whether the course will continue on-site, or will be online (in Moodle via BitgBlueButton). A hybrid course (i.e. both on-site and online at the same time) or recorded sessions are not planned.

Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Content: In this course we want to discuss about real applications (as opposed to pseudo-real contexts) of mathematics in everyday life and work situations. To that end, students shall on the one hand analyze existing word problems in text books with respect to their reality, on the other hand create and present word problems describing real applications. The presentation is supposed to be 60 minutes long (20 minutes for the analysis of existing word problems, 40 minutes for the presentation of the self-developed word problems). Interactive parts (involving the other students) are possible, but should not constitute the majority of the presentation. After the presentation, there will be a discussion and feedback about the analysis and the self-developed word problems. The word problems will be available to all participating students via Moodle.Aims: Being able to analyze word problems with respect to given and self-developed criteria, being able to create and present real-life-application tasks to given topics. Methods: group work, presentation, discussion
Assessment and permitted materials
The assessment is based on the presentation, the uploaded self-developed word problems, and the regular active participation.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum requirements for a positive assessment:

*) Uploading the self-developed word problems in Moodle
*) Regular active participationAssessment criteria:
*) analysis of existing word problems (30 %)
*) self-developed word problems (50 %)
*) regular participation in discussions (20 %)
