Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents:

Micro environment: exchange of energy, mass and momentum
Laws for heat transfer, diffusion, friction

Temperature and profiles in air and soil, temperature waves

Humidity, temperature of humid surfaces, water potential and vapor pressure, evaporative cooling.

Atmospheric turbulence, wind profiles, wind in plant canopy.

Thermal radiation, solar radiation, diffuse radiation, radiant energy budget, budget of a leaf.

Heat, mass, and momentum transfer: Vapor diffusion, convection, friction in fluids and gases.

Energy budget of animals: metabolic rate, geometric factors, latent heat, heat conduction through fir and clothing, climate diagram, water budget of animals.

Humans and their environment: Metabolic rate and evaporation, survival under extreme conditions, comfortable environment.

Plants and their environment: Photosynthesis, transpiration and leaf energy budget, optimum leaf form.

Exchange processes in plant canopies, radiation and geometry, optimizing photosynthesis, evaporation, energy budget.
