Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is for Earth and Life scientists and provides a theoretical and practical introduction into major aspects of evolutionary palaeobiology to better understand the evolutionary history and relationships of organisms: (1) Phylogeny and systematics, (2) the quality of the fossil record, and (3) diversity patterns. The students will gain experience with some of the most frequently used methodological approaches in macroevolutionary research. They will learn to collect and prepare data and explore its characteristics. They also will learn to design and analyse various data sets, interpret and present their results, and write a comprehensive scientific report.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course comprises npi and pi portions and will be conducted according to the pi rules.
Three continual assessments have to be completed (each 20 points) and a presentation of a specific topic in evolutionary research at the end of the first paret of the course (20 points). Tpoics will be presented at the beginning of the course and on Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is successfully completed if each continual assessment is passed. Grading is proportional to the sum of achieved points from all continual assessments (at least 60%).

Unjustified absence during a continual assessments is evaluated each with 0 points. Only in exceptional cases, a separate alternate date for a failed continual assessment is possible.

General attendance is obligatory on the first day of the course. Registered and on the first day unfounded absent persons are permanently excluded from the course.
