Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course provides an introduction to climate models, including their dynamics and physics, and fundamental data analysis techniques, including time series analysis, filtering, and model evaluation.

At the end of the semester, students can:
- Describe the concept and structure of climate models
- Explain the properties of different numerical methods and parameterization schemes
- Run a climate model in a high performance computing environment
- Analyze and visualize model output

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exams (intermediate and final exam), active participation in the exercises

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade is influenced in equal parts by the lecture and exercise part. For a positive grade a total percentage score of at least 50% is required. Every exercise counts as partial achievement, and all partial achievements have to be completed.

Basic knowledge of Python is required to follow this course. Basic knowledge of bash and meteorological concepts is an advantage.
