410009 SE Gender History in Imerial and Colonial Contexts (2024S)

The seminar examines the analytical potential of applying a gender-historical perspective to the history of (colonial) empires. We are interested in the scopes of agency and the positioning of historical actors - both in elite and subaltern positions. The category of gender should not be examined in isolation, but always in its interactions with other categories (class, ethnicity, race, etc.). We also ask to what extent gender as a category plays a role in the self-perceptions and external perceptions of empires and colonial empires, i.e. how the geopolitical positioning of these entities is negotiated via gender-related attributions.
