Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Description
Spirituality plays a prominent role in the Eastern Orthodox traditions and in the construction of contemporary Eastern Orthodox identity. This seminar will explore some classics works of spirituality to present important authors and theological themes in traditions of Eastern Orthodox spirituality.

Learning outcomes
• Students will know a general outline of the history of Eastern Orthodox spirituality
• Students will be able to identify important spiritual authors in the Eastern Orthodox tradition
• Students will be able to identify and theologically reflect on important themes in Eastern Orthodox spiritual literature

Learning activities
Presentations by the teacher, presentations of assigned reading material by students, written summaries, group discussions, and written essays.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The students will be graded both on their active participation in groups discussion at the seminar and on their individual written work.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimal requirements
Mandatory participation in the seminars. Students may be absent two times without special cause. Students must achieve a minimum of 50 points to pass.

Grading
1 (sehr gut) -> 100-89 points
2 (gut) -> 88-76 points
3 (befriedigend) -> 75-63 points
4 (genügend) -> 62-50 points
5 (nicht genügend) -> 49-0 points
Written paper is worth 40 points, seminar presentations are worth 40 points, and participation in seminar discussion is worth 20 points.
