Canon law is the institutionalized normative order that governs the organization and activities of the church. It is a complex legal order with norms from different sources. The canon law of the Eastern Orthodox Churches is based on the canons (‘guidelines’, ‘rules’) of the councils of the early church. The Eastern Orthodox Church is, in confessional terms, the church of the seven ecumenical councils and its doctrine and canon law are bound by the decisions of the seven ecumenical councils of the early church. This seminar will explore the sources, principles, and basic institution of Eastern Orthodox canon law with a focus on the ordained ministry, church organization, clerical discipline, and marriage.Learning outcomes:
• Students will know a general outline of the history of the sources, principles, and institutions of Eastern Orthodox canon law
• Students will be able to analyze practical cases on the basis of the sources and principles of Eastern Orthodox canon law
• Students will be able to identify and theologically reflect on the canonical norms governing ordained ministry, church organization, and marriage in Eastern Orthodox canon law.Learning activities:
Presentations by the teacher, presentations of assigned reading material by students, written summaries, group discussions, and written essays.
