Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

East Asia (China/Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam) is a vibrant cauldron of new religious developments. This course employs a Religious Studies perspective, introducing key actors of the East Asian new religious panorama. The selected new religious movements (NRMs) will be explored in their historical, doctrinal, and ritual dimension with a particular focus on the millenarian underpinnings, drawing richly on textual and video sources. Theoretical aspects as well as periodisation and classification schemes of East Asian NRMs will be discussed. Students will be familiarised with crucial issues in the study of East Asian NRMs.

The mode of assessment is listed in the section below. The language of instruction is English. Proficiency in any East Asian language is not required. Students are expected to engage in class discussion.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The course assessment comprises of a written exam (50%); an oral presentation (20%); participation and class interaction (30%).
