010084 SE Spezielle Fachdidaktik II: What is in a Book? Stories in the Religious Education Classroom (2011S)

Stories are one of the most powerful tools teachers can use in Religious Education Classes. As the use of stories allows the escape from a regular teaching and learning experience, thus from a regular class format, students will not realize they are actually learning. In fact, through the use of stories, students will become better listeners, clearer and more confident speakers, their memories more retentive and their attitudes more cooperative.
In this seminar, we will first take a close look at how to best incorporate stories into R.E. Different models and theories about the use of stories and storytelling will be discussed leading to a personal evaluation of various approaches. Moreover, several tools will be presented that support the understanding of a story, e.g. finger puppets, masks, etc.
Throughout the course, we will critically analyze the benefits and drawbacks of various stories, starting from Bible Stories from the Old and New Testament, parables and songs as a basis for teaching.
In a last step, we will use children's literature as a well to bring a subtle point to students as so many fine children's books carry a strong theological message.
After having gained expertise in the field of 'Stories and How To Use Them in Class', students will leave this seminar with a collection of stories and teaching material useful for their future R.E. careers.
