Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The course will train students to understand and perceive the importance of the visual arts in religious cultures, especially in Christianity. Contents of the course are basic concepts of iconography, iconology, iconic, and the analysis of iconographic themes. Through visual presentations students will be able to identify the main iconographic themes of Christian art, structured according to certain periods. A focus will be on the connection between the artwork and the intention of the Church to transmit certain theological doctrines and religious ideas. The seminar will work intensively with pictures, oresented by Power Point presentations and handouts.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Active participation, one oral presentation, one written assignment.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students choose a topic (suggested in the second seminar session) to write a short assignment to be submitted towards the end of the seminar. The assignment will be a summary of an analysis of a work of art, using the terminology of iconography and iconology (40%). Active participation (20%). In the last three seminar sessions, students will present and analyze iconographic themes (chosen by themselves) on the basis of the acquired skills and special literature (40%).
