Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course will present the relation between folklore studies and religious studies through the history of folkloristics (overview of major theories, starting with J. Grimm). and through major theoretical issues (the status of genres, specially fairy-tale and legend (Sage); belief as classification criterion; folklore as a source for "popular religion", "folk religion", "folk demonology", "lower mythology", "vernacular religion"; relation of folklore, myth and ritual in key theories in the field).

Short written contributions during the teaching week.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Basic knowledge of the history of the academic study of religions.
Attendance 30%
Participation at the class 30 %
Written contribution 40%

Prüfungsstoff

The examination material will be the content of the lecture, which will be documented partly by slides, partly by given/recommended texts.

Literatur

Readings will be provided/recommended throughout the course.
