Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The goals of the course are to understand and perceive the importance of the visual arts in religious cultures, especially in Christianity. In the seminars, students learn about basic concepts of iconography, iconology, iconic, and they are introduced into the analysis of iconographic themes. Through visual presentation, students can identify the main iconographic themes of the eras of Christian art. They understand the connection between artwork and the intention of the Church, to transmit the teachings of theology and religious ideology. The seminars include rich pictures representation prepared with Power Point and handouts.

Active participation, contribution with own presentation

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students choose a topic (recommended in the seventh seminar) to write a short assignment about, which they submit by email until 10th June. The assignment is a summary of an analysis of a work of art, using the terminology of iconography and iconology (40%). Active participation (20%). In the last seminar (27th May), students present and analyze iconographic themes (chosen by them) on the basis of the acquired skills and special literature (40%).
