Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Preclassic, classic, postclassic, colonial, and contemporary Maya religion represents an incredible continuity of 4,000 years. The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the basic categories of Maya religion and mythology, from the earliest times to the present. Both the continuity of the investigated phenomena and their ability to change meaning over time will be essential. In the end, we will familiarise ourselves with the (limited) possibilities to penetrate into a completely different world, which developed being entirely cut off from the religious phenomena of the so-called Old World. We will try to apply the latest theories that could help us simplify this difficult task.

Principal Topics:

1. Maya cultural, linguistic, and geographical area
2. Preclassic Maya religion: Images and stories
3. Preclassic Maya religion: Gods and rituals
4. Classic Maya religion: Hieroglyphs and sacred symbols
5. Classic Maya Religion: Sacred calendar system
6. Classic Maya Religion: Gods of the sun and rain
7. Classic Maya Religion: The maize god and his story
8. Postclassic Maya Religion: Gods from the codices
9. Postclassic Maya Religion: Rituals of the blood
10. Colonial and contemporary Maya religion: Lacandon mythology
11. Colonial and contemporary Maya religion: Maximon and other Guatemalan saints
12. Colonial and contemporary Maya religion: Theories for catching the elusive

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Each lecture will consist of the presentation of a main topic accompanied by questions and discussion, followed by a student presentation on the assigned topic, a critical analysis, and a discussion of this presentation.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The number of student presentations will depend on the number of students, but every attending student will have at least one 15-20 min. PowerPoint presentation to make. This presentation will be part of the final assessment, amounting to 35% of the final grade. Another 15% will be based on participation at the discussions (which presupposes the reading of literature). Finally, 50% of the overall assessment will be based on the final written test, in which students will answer basic questions (presented by the lecturer during the sessions).

Prüfungsstoff

(English versions are preferred, but in case of no other alternative, then German translations can be also used. However, please take into account that the presentation and discussion will be in English).
