Saint Francis is probably the stigmatic most depicted in Italy between the thirteenth and the sixteenth centuries. The stigmata were received by Francis in 1224 and made known to the Franciscan Order by Brother Elias of Cortona after Francis' death in 1226. For a long time the Franciscans defended Saint Francis as the only saint to have received the stigmata. However, between Francis' death and the end of the nineteenth century over 300 stigmatics had been recorded. Well-known saints such as Catherine of Siena and Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi also experienced the stigmata.
I will concentrate on the development of understanding of the phenomenon of stigmata from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. Starting with Saint Francis, I will explore the various ways in which holy men and women exhibited their stigmata, and the ways in which stigmata were written about and represented.
Prüfungskriterien:
Voraussetzung zur Erlangung eines Prüfungsnachweises ist sowohl die Präsenz und die aktive Teilnahme des(r) Studierenden als auch das Verfassen einer SE-Arbeit, welche längstens bis 30.11.2008 eingereicht werden muss.
