Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar gives in introduction into the field of public health ethics situated between personal autonomy and state paternalism. The seminar aims to define the basic concepts (public health, ethics, medical ethics, health, illness/disease) as well as to explore the concrete areas of application and the related ethical and social political fields of conflict.
The seminar will cover the following specific areas:
- Historical Perspectives on societies, and their implications for public health
- Specific action fields of public health today (e.g. tabacco control, adipositas epidemic, allergies)
- Role of the state in the field of health rights and duties, potentials and limits of state influence on population health
- Tension between individual liberties and the health of everyone, i.e. the common good in an ethical perspective

The aim of the seminar is to provide basic knowledge about the central questions of public health ethics in its individual ethical and social political dimensions. By means of concrete case studies, the tension between autonomy and paternalism will be explored and ethically reflected solutions suggested.
