Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course will introduce students to the law and institutional framework of the international protection of cultural heritage. It will familiarize them with the relevant international conventions, the work of international and regional organisations and NGOs, as well as national implementing legislation and policies.
Topics include tangible and intangible world heritage; the protection of world heritage in peacetime and during armed conflict; the world heritage list & its nomination process; UNESCO-ICOM-ICOMOS-Blue Shield; dispute settlement and international criminal law responses to violations of norms on the protection of cultural heritage.
The course will be taught interactively, using a combination of lectures, student presentations and class discussions.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Preparation for each session and active participation in class; case studies and positive written exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Preparation and active participation in class (20 per cent); presentation of case study (30 per cent); final written exam (50 per cent).

Prüfungsstoff

Topics addressed in class, as reflected in slides and in the required readings.
