Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The goal of this class is to familiarise students with the legal and economic problems of cross-border financial transactions and their repercussions on the stability of global financial markets.
We will study typical financial transactions, such as asset securitizations, credit default swaps or repurchase agreements (repos), as well as new financial products, such as cryptocurrencies, in order to understand their functions, economic importance and legal problems. We will then discuss the regulatory reactions to these phenomena. We will also look at the difficulties caused by multiple, overlapping rules originating from different legislators and regulators.
All classes will be held in English. Students will be assigned a reading before each class. This could be an article or a court decision. Students will receive a manuscript to review the class and prepare for the exam.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students will be assessed on the basis of a written exam and on the basis of their participation during the class, weighted 70% for the written exam and 30% for oral participation. In the written exam, unmodified legal texts will be permitted.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The successful candidate must demonstrate a familiarity with the practice and regulation of global finance. The exam will consist of a series of questions that have to be answered in essay format.

Prüfungsstoff

The grades will be based on the comprehensiveness, soundness and accuracy of the student’s answers.
Only topics discussed in the class will be examined.
