Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course discusses EU competition and State aid law. In particular, the course analyses the provisions of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and the case-law of the EU Court of Justice concerning anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominance, merger control, as well as State aid rules. The course includes the basics of competition economics.

This is an advanced course, which builds upon the course VO Introduction to European Law, held during the winter term. Therefore, students are expected to have basic background knowledge about the EU institutions and the EU legal sources.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

IREWI students will take a single oral exam, covering the 3 courses included in Module 5, European Union Law. IREWI students will take the oral exam with one of the Professors of the Department of European, International, and Comparative Law, automatically assigned in alphabetical order.

Erasmus/exchange students may take an oral exam with the teacher of the course. The date, time and place of the oral exam will be communicated throughout the course. The exam will take place in the English language. The grade and the number of ECTS credits for the present course will appear on the certificate listing the courses taken by the student during his/her Erasmus/exchange period at the University of Vienna.

Erasmus/exchange students who actively participate in the class by summarizing one of the rulings assigned as weekly reading material will receive a “+”. Every “+” will increase the final grade of the course of 0.25 points, up to a maximum of 1 point.
