Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar studies the relation between democracy and liberalism. Obviously, the topic was chosen with an eye to developments in Central and Eastern Europe, notably Hungary, but current developments need to be put into a broader perspective. Hence, the seminar will address the ancient perspective on democracy, the emergence of modern representative democracy, and the rise of its “authoritarian” counterpart.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Oral presentation on a topic of the seminar, seminar paper of roughly 12-15 pages, unless you decide to prepare a „Diplomseminararbeit“. The much more demanding requirements for the Diplomseminararbeit will be set out on the Moodle
page.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Compulsory attendance at all dates , Participation at the discussion. seminar paper of roughly 12-15 pages, unless you decide to prepare a „Diplomseminararbeit“. However, a "Diplomseminararbeit" can only be written after submission of a letter of motivation and consultation with Prof. Somek.

Prüfungsstoff

Papers of the presentations of the participants with subsequent discussion.
