Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The primary aim of the course is to provide a general introduction to the history of the legal condition of Jews and Jewries from the 15th century to the present. Particular emphasis will be given to the role of Jewish law in the legal pluralism of pre-modern Europe, the correlation between modern nation-building and Jewish emancipation and its limits, the role of international law for the protection of the rights of Jews and aspects of the contemporary public law of the State of Israel.
In terms of method the course is a) taught on the basis of concrete examples for "law in action" (noms, contracts, jurisdiction and administration) rather than "law in the books" and b) the assumption that the history of the legal positon of the Jews is of interest also for our undestanding of general legal history.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The grade is determined by three factors: regular attendance and active participation in the regular sessions plus two out of several extra sessions that are on offer (students may miss not more than two sessions), a translation and critical commentary of a brief passage from Christian Wilhelm Dohm's famous treatise "Über die bürgerliche Verbesserung der Juden" (English-only speakers may help fellow-students) and a written exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The successful completion of the course is conditional on regular attendance, the translation and critical commentary of a short text and a pass in the written exam. The written exam makes up two thirds of the final grade.
