Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This elective course is the follow-up of the course "General Legal Issues of the Use of Outer Space technologies" which is regularly offered in the winter semester. However, completion of that course is not a prerequisite for taking part in the summer semester. In the first meeting and via e-learning on Moodle the most important legal texts and principles will be repeated. This course will delve deeper into some topical and controversial legal issues in the use and exploration of outer space. They include liability for damage caused by space activities on Earth and in outer space, space debris and environmental issues in outer space, codes of conduct and military uses of outer space, legal problems connected to direct television broadcasting and remote sensing, international cooperation (in particular in the International Space Station ISS) and space tourism.
We will also organise a mini "moot court", involving a fictitious dispute relating to issues in outer space law to be held before the International Court of Justice.
This course is part of the specialisation ("Wahlfachkorb") in "The Law of International Relations" and "Law and Technology".
It is open also to international students, in particular Erasmus and Australian exchange students. Students are expected to do work also via e-learning (Moodle).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Active participation in class, e-learning tests, written memorials and oral presentations in the mini moot court.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

An insight into some special areas of space law; application of legal rules and principles to some concrete issues in the contemporary use of outer space.

Prüfungsstoff

Students are expected to read assigned texts made available on the Moodle e-learning platform and to participate actively in the discussion. In addition, a mini moot court on a fictitious space law case will be organised.
