Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

How can we use experiments to learn more about organizations?
This course covers the various forms of experiments in strategy and organizational research. It provides an overview of the process of creating a research design.
A major aspect is the comparison of the different approaches to laboratory experiments in different fields. First, we discuss the experimental methods on a theoretical and practical level. We use well-known experiments as examples of advantages and limitations of the experimental methods. As the main topic, we will focus on recent experiments in strategy and organizational design. Students will participate by reading and presenting articles about interesting experiments. As the main project, students will determine their own research questions, review the corresponding literature and devise a proposal for a possible experiment.

Please be aware that student papers will be checked for plagiarism with the software TURNITIN. Students who plagiarize will fail this course.

Please refer to www.strategy.univie.ac.at for general information on our courses.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Attendance is absolutely mandatory during the entire first session of this course!

15% - Experiments presentation
20% - Exam
20% - Paper-idea presentation
45% - Final Paper

For all group assignments (Experiments presentation, Paper-idea presentation and Final Paper), 80% of the grade will be determined by the lecturer, while 20% are determined by the peers in the assigned group.

Please note that TURNITIN will be used in order to test all written coursework (e.g. assignments, final papers) for possible plagiarism.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Missing the first session without prior written notice to the lecturer (at least 24 hours before the start of the session) providing a relevant reason/proof (e.g. doctor’s notice in case of illness) will result in deregistration from the course. In such cases the missing student’s place will be given to the person next in line on the waiting list (if this person is present in the first session).

In general, students are allowed to miss up to 10% (2.5 hours) of scheduled classes without any consequences. Any further absence has to be documented with a doctor's notice. Exceeding this limit, however, will result in failing the class.

1. Understanding, evaluating, and classifying experiments
2. Using (formal) models to design experiments
3. Analyzing organization from a designer's perspective
4. Learning how experiments are used (for research) in strategy and organizational studies

The grading scheme will look as follows:
5 – [0%;50%)
4 – [50%;62.5%)
3 – [62.5%;75%)
2 – [75%;87.5%)
1 – [87.5%;100%]
