Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this seminar, participants learn how to give a scientific presentation, contribute to an academic discussion (by asking questions, answering questions and making comments), prepare and write a bachelor’s thesis, which includes getting to know
• scientific working and scientific writing,
• literature search,
• standards of academic honesty and
• rules of referencing and citation.

The seminar will focus on investment in precious metals from the perspective of a retail investor, from the perspective of a (possibly specialised) institutional investor, from the perspective of a firm in the precious metals sector, and from a societal point of view.

The seminar will start with a detailed introduction into the topics and methods relevant to the seminar by the tutor. Then, participants will start to write their bachelor’s theses in groups of two participants, and each participant will give two presentations. The presentations of other participants are commented on and discussed. This enables everyone to receive detailed feedback.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

First, every participant will have to give two talks (oral presentations based on his/her presentation slides). The first talk focuses on his/her research questions and research methods, whereas the second talk presents the results of the bachelor’s thesis.

Second, every student needs to participate actively in the seminar (by asking questions, answering questions, making comments).

Third, every participant will have to write a bachelor’s thesis.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The grade of a participant depends on his/her two presentations (max. 25 % of the achievable scores), his/her active participation (max. 25 % of the achievable scores), and his/her bachelor’s thesis (50 %).

The presentation slides to be created should summarise the essentials correctly and clearly in terms of content. They are the basis for the oral presentations. Every set of slides must contain, among other things, a comprehensive bibliography based on the literature search carried out in libraries and on the internet. The oral presentations should be given in an easily understandable, appealing and sensibly structured manner.

Permanent attendance is a necessary condition for passing, but it is not sufficient. Through active participation in the form of questions, answers to questions and comments, students should take part in the discussion in the seminar. A one-time excused absence is possible. If a participant is absent for a longer period, the seminar cannot be completed successfully.

The most important part is to write the bachelor’s theses. Students select their subjects from a list given by the tutor.
