Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course provides an introduction to the most common statistical methods that are used in empirical economics. This includes linear regression (ordinary least squares, generalized least squares, instrumental variables) in static and dynamic equations and the corresponding hypothesis tests (restriction tests as well as diagnostic tests). The methods are highlighted by empirical applications in Stata. Specific emphasis is on the application of adequate terminology.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment is based on three written tests and on homework assignments. The closed-book tests carry different weights, the first and most important one carries 35%, the two later tests 25% each. and the homework assignments contribute 20% to the final grade.
Following the health regulations in place, tests are planned as on-line, but we should leave open the possibility of having reasonable tests again as soon as this will be feasible.
The homework assignments can be done in groups of up to three persons and carry a weight of up to 10% each. A positive grade requires at least 50 % of the maximum achievable score and attendance at the first written test.
Following regulations from the study coordinator regarding make-up tests, the first test can be taken again in January, in which case the result of the make-up test will count exclusively. Registration for the make-up test before Christmas.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims of the module: Participants will have acquired the necessary skills for the analysis of economic data by statistical procedures and for drawing conclusions from the empirical analysis. They are able to apply models derived from economic data to concrete data and to test theory-based hypotheses empirically.

This course provides the theoretical basis, and the tutorial that should be attended following this course provides the hands-on applied skills.
