Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course students are equipped with the skills to write and present an essay on a topic from the field of macroeconomics. In terms of content the focus lies on the macroeconomic implications that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on different sectors and markets in industrialized countries. Challenges for and reactions by policy-makers are also considered. Students are introduced to key aspects of writing a scientific essay. They will learn how to formulate a research question, review and cite related studies and structure the essay. A reading list is provided in the first session. It contains a set of alternative topics and is intended to guide students towards important questions and related literature in the field. Following the introduction and the choice of a topic, essay concepts will be presented in class which allows to receive feedback from peers to further improve the essay.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The course language is English, but essays can be written in German. It is imperative to participate in the first three sessions. The final grade will be based on presenting and submitting a written essay (30% presentation and submission each) and providing oral and written feedback on the essay of another student (20% presentation and submission each). Passing requires 50 percent of all possible points.
