Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims at providing students with a basic understanding of the fundamental elements, aspects, and rules of international economic law with a focus on international trade law and the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Its history and key principles will be described by reference to the respective articles in its trade agreements and case-law from the WTO dispute settlement system.
The relationship between the WTO, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the EU common market (including free trade agreements such as CETA) are also covered, including discussions on development like the "trade war" between the US and China or Brexit. Suggestions for further topics are welcome.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

– active participation at the beginning and during each session (contributing to discussions and answering questions about topic covered in previous sessions)
– written exams in the final two sessions (composed of single Choice Questions, short essay questions and case studies)
– printouts of the relevant treaties (GATT, WTO treaty, GATS, ...) and dictionaries may be used
– NO additional notes other than cross-references or translations are allowed!

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

– active participation in class (8 points)
– two written exams (72 points in total)
— one online via Moodle (Single/Multiple Choice and right or wrong-questions)
— one brief case study, i.e. a legal analysis of a hypothetical scenario
> 40 points for a positive grade
– two unexcused absences max

International trade law (including its evolvement and historic origins) and the WTO system
EU Internal Market law
Basics of international investment law and its relationship to trade law (e.g. BITs or investment chapters in free trade agreements like NAFTA or CETA)
