Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The policies of the European Union (EU) profoundly affect the lives of people in Europe and around the world. The creation of the single market (~450 million consumers) and the common currency (Euro: a powerful international currency, despite its young age) bear witness to it. In addition to these economic achievements, the EU is a global actor in areas such as environmental protection, international trade, development aid, etc.
In this course attending students will study: a) EU policies with a predominantly internal focus; b) EU’s external dimension of select policies; c) debate on the EU's legitimacy and democratic deficit.
The classes will be structured as follows: Group presentation - max.30min; Small-group discussions - ~15min; Open class discussion - remaining time.

Objectives of the course:
The aim of the course is twofold
a) to enable students gain an in-depth understanding of relevant EU policies/debates and thus aptly navigate the context within which business is done in the EU;
b) advance students' ability to produce spoken and written analyses in accordance with good academic practices.
