Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Content

Building upon the introductory course of econometrics, this course deepens the understanding of microeconometric theory and the estimation methods used in empirical analysis of microdata. Next to the estimation of causal effects, complementary techniques which are necessary to deal with specific data structures are discussed. During computer sessions, students learn to apply the introduced methods.

Questions addressed in this course are, among others: What methods allow to estimate causal effects? Which techniques are suitable for the analysis of categorical outcomes or duration outcomes? What are the implications of missing data or measurement error? How can the discussed estimation methods be implemented in practice? Etc.

Course goals

At the end of the course, students will be familiar with the relevant techniques and tools used in empirical microeconomics. This will allow them to critically read and understand empirical research. For a given research question and dataset, students will be able to choose appropriate econometric methods and conduct a thorough empirical analysis.

Prerequisites

• Prior knowledge of statistics and econometrics (MA course “Introductory Econometrics” or equivalent)
• Basic programming skills with statistical software

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The assessment consists of three parts: a midterm exam, a final exam and an empirical project.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The final grade is a weighted average of the grade points received for each part:

Midterm exam (30%)
Final exam (30%)
Empirical project (40%)

All covered material is relevant for the exams.
