Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In most advanced countries, health care is a public utility. EU countries aim to provide universal healthcare by national healthcare systems or insurance. Medicines are an important and well-identifiable component of health care.
The setting of this seminar may be thought of as students acting as consultants to a health insurance or authority. The institution requests specific recommendations about introducing new policies or new medicines. The students have to collect and analyze information, make recommendations based on this research about introducing new policies and give reasons for your recommendations. These must have a scientific basis.
After completion, students should have
- Have a basic understanding of healthcare systems and the role of the pharmaceutical industry within these systems
- Knowledge of the economic instruments used in managing the reimbursement of medicines
• Improved presentation skills
• Be familiar with researching and citing sources

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

- Initial outline showing which aspects of the topic will be covered
- Oral presentation and discussion
- Written seminar paper. Research for this can utilize books, Internet and other sources.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

English language competence level at least B2 (upper intermediate user) according to the Common European Framework
Attendance of preliminary talk and presentation sessions.
Grade is based upon the outline (10%), oral presentation and active participation in the discussions (40%) and written paper (50%). Criteria are understanding of the subject and the problems it may entail for providing access to healthcare, level of research and analysis, reasoning behind proposed recommendations regarding the topic. Level of knowledge about medicine or pharmaceutical sciences will not influence grades.
