Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The objectives of this course are to
- learn about the possibilities of publishing multimedia objects on the Web
- learn how applications can exchange (meta-)data using common Web Service technologies
- learn how to publish and interlink (meta)data on the Web and about the benefits this can bring
- get an introduction to the theoretical background of Facebook & co
- learn how to use the wisdom of the crowd to generate metadata

The course covers the following topics:

- What is a Multimedia Information System?
- Evolution of Multimedia Information Systems
From Single-media Databases to (Distributed) Multimedia Databases to Web 2.0
- The Nature of Multimedia Data
- Media Objects on the Web
covering metadata and media aspects of the emerging HTML5 standard
and alternatives such as Flash, languages like SMIL and AJAX
- Service Protocols on the Web
covering current state of the art formats and protocols (web service technologies)
in that area
- Linked (Open) Data on the Web
Semantic technologies as the enabling technologies
- Knowledge organisation systems: OWL, SKOS
- The Social Web & Human-based Computation

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment: Written exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aim of this lecture course is to given an in-depth understanding of multimedia technologies with all its involved entities (data, protocols, users, etc.). Furthermore, the lecture will give insights into ongoing research activities in that field.

The exam verifies to what extend the objectives of the course are accomplished by the students.

Grading / Beurteilungsmaßstab gemäß der erreichten Punkte (%):
89 <= P <= 100 Sehr Gut (1)
76 <= P < 89 Gut (2)
63 <= P < 76 Befriedigend (3)
50 <= P < 63 Genügend (4)
0 <= P < 50 Nicht Genügend (5)

Prüfungsstoff

Relevant for the exam is always the content which was subject to the most recent course. The scope of the relevant course content is defined by means of the course materials made available during the most recent course. The course material consists of the slides and of the literature referenced in the material. The successful study of this course requires the thorough study of the referenced literature (books, papers, etc.). Furthermore, participation in the accompanying exercise course is strongly recommended.
