Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will survey the history of antisemitic thought and of the persecution of Jews in the Arab World from the time of Mohammad until the present. The class will focus on the status of Jews in Muslim lands (dhimmis) and their cultural, legal, and physical persecution all of which were and are a regular part of what Jews encounter daily in the Arab world. The religious and cultural roots of antisemitism in Islam and the Arab world will be explored and contextualized as it appeared over the centuries, from Mohammad to the present time, the varieties of antisemitic behavior and Jew hatred will be documented, and their causes explored. Among other topics, the following will be explored:

• antisemitism and Jew hatred in early Islam
• the impact of western colonialism on Jew hatred in the Arab world
• the impact of National Socialism on Jew hatred in the Arab world
• the impact of the Soviet Union on anti-Zionism in the Arab world
• the impact of Muslim Radicalism on Jew hatred in the Arab world
• the history of anti-Zionism in the Arab world

Written and oral presentation of a research project, active and regular participation in class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Regular participation, and writing of a research project that is presended both orally and in writing.

Prüfungsstoff

You should demonstrate both the ability to critically reflect and contextualize the individual topics of antisemitic polemics in the Arab World. In addition, you should develop an understanding of the history of Arab antisemitism in it historical contexts.
