In this seminar, students will explore the uses of scientific methods to acquire data on human-environmental interactions from past landscapes. Basic concepts and methods in human ecodynamics and co-adaptation will be introduced and discussed. Methods in geoarchaeology and environmental archaeology will be briefly reviewed prior knowledge of geoarchaeological concepts and methods is strongly recommended. Students will research topics such as site formation and disturbance, cultural resilience, agricultural sustainability, pollution, and traces of human impact, among others.Students will learn to critically read, summarize, present, and write up a chosen major case study. During this process, students will learn the skills necessary for producing and presenting scientific research, including lecture presentation style.Students will be expected to:
- Select an individual topic of research from criteria provided by the instructors
- Perform independent research on the selected topic
- Produce an Abstract and reference list of their research topic by Workshop 1 (April)
- Give a presentation on the selected topic
- Give and receive feedback on their research abstract and presentation from peers and instructors
- Write a final paper on the selected topic of research, due by 23rd of June. Methods
Lecture, readings, group discussions, written summaries, written paper
