Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In this course, based on close reading of primary sources, I would like to emphasize the differences, rather than the similarities in the Judaisms through history. Doing this, I would like to concentrate on two, in my view basic, characteristics of any Judaism: the understanding and importance of tradition in any given "form" of Judaism and the view of that Judaism on what constitutes Jewish identity. I hope to show that there has always been diversity in what seemed to be unity regarding these topics; but also, that there has always been unity in diversity.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Students are required to study the primary sources and submit short (no more than a page at a time) discussion papers (these will be in the form of either guided discussions, requests for asking questions about certain aspects of the texts, etc.) prior to classes. Apart from this, regular attendance of lectures and participation in the discussion is obligatory. There will be no final exam for students who regularly submit the discussion papers during the semester (every student is allowed not to submit two discussion papers per semester without this having an impact on his or her final note).
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Prüfungsstoff
The lectures will concentrate on interpretation of the primary sources, especially with regard to the topic of "tradition" on the one hand, and the topic of "identity" on the other. Apart from the first meeting on the 4th of October, discussion will be the most important part of the meetings and will take up most of the time. The lecturer would like to limit herself to actually "lecturing" to opening and closing remarks and explanations at the beginning and the end of each meeting.
