Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Kants "Kritik der Urteilskraft" argued that aesthetics involved an autonomous realm of judgment. Whilst this may be true, the existence of prehistoric art makes the question of appreciation even more complex than Kant imagined. In this seminar series, students will be introduced to a panorama of "art" from varied contexts around the world, gain understanding of the fundamental issues in aesthetic theory and the anthropology of art and prepare seminar work on material from the culture or area period of their choice.

Students will gain advanced level competence in the application of aesthetic and semiotic theory to prehistoric case studies.
