Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Contents of the course:
Study of the different capital cities of ancient Egypt through time (Memphis, Thebes, Amarna, Piramesses etc.). Their characteristics, their organisation, their history etc. will be analysed and discussed, based mainly on the archaeological remains but also textual and iconographic sources.

The course is organized around student presentations and a productive discussion between teacher and students on the different contributions and the reading of selected bibliography.

The course provides the students with a detailed knowledge of one aspect of the culture of ancient Egypt, with a focus on archaeology, built environment, material culture, art and architecture.
The aims of the course are to:
- provide students with the opportunity to study at an advanced level a substantive subject in the field of Egyptology.
- prepare students for research in the archaeology and culture of ancient Egypt.
- to give students training in a range of general skills, such as writing, presentation and data analysis.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment will be based on the following criteria:
- Draft of the presentation (5%)
- Oral presentation (35%)
- Essay (50%)
- Active participation in the class discussion (10%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

At least 50% of the maximum number of points is required for a positive assessment.

Regular and active participation is expected as an inherent part of the assessment. Only one absence is tolerated. It must be justified in advance, i.e. before the missed lesson, to the lecturer by e-mail.
