Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course, students will examine the development of human activity in western Sicily from the Upper Paleolithic to the modern era from archaeological perspectives. In addition to the study of particular site/period concerns, students will have the opportunity to research and elaborate upon topics which include colonial activity, land and sea trade, continuity and change in land use, local responses to colonial activity in prehistory and historical times, and regional interaction in the western Sicilian landscape.

Students will be expected to:
- Select an individual topic of research from criteria provided by the instructors
- Perform independent research on the selected topic
- Give a presentation on the selected topic and receive feedback from peers/instructors
- Write a final paper on the selected topic of research
This class will serve as preparation for a planned excursion to Sicily during the summer semester of 2018. Only students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to enroll in the subsequent excursion.
