Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course reflects the nowadays reality when the
current Russian-Ukrainian war defines largely contours of the future world. The
centrality of the Ukrainian issue is not, however, a new phenomenon: as much as
anything, both the WWI and WWII turned on the fate of Ukraine. Ukrainian past and
global history are deeply interconnected: Ukrainian issue reemerged every time
during major waves of globalization - as it was visible during the rise of the West
since 1492, the crisis of the XVII century, the revolutions of 1848, 1917, 1968 and
1989. The course particularly focuses on violence as a central topic of global history
and how modern societies deals with it.

CHARACTER: the course consists basically of 75 mins lectures followed by 15 mins class discussions. The lectures are based on Yaroslav Hrytsak’s book book "Ukraine: The Forging of a Nation" (2023).
