Medieval Survey - Sources

Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung

We will work through readings and discussion key medieval primary sources and a few representative secondary studies. It is advised to take in parallel VO 070013, "History of the Middle Ages" (Buc), which will provide the broad context for the primary sources. Both classes complete one another to provide for a wider picture of the European Middle Ages.

Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Reading and analysis of primary sources, including: Sources on the Conversion of Constantine, Beowulf, Gregory of Tours, the Song of Roland, courtly love poems, inquisition records. Some important secondary sources will also be read and discussed .

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Based on attendance and participation in discussion, and on the regular writing assignment. Most weeks but the first and the last a short paper will be due, for 5 points. Participation will b worth 15 points.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

To give the students some sense of the breadth of sources available to the historian of medieval Europe, introduce them to source analysis, and introduce them to some key controversies and modes of explaining historical phenomena of the Middle Ages.
