Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Via close reading, writing, and discussing, an introduction to medieval Eurasian history. This guided reading is a companion to the lecture course Medieval Eurasia. There are four foci, Western Europe, Central Asia, China, and Japan. The red threads are warrior, clerical, and merchant elites
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Evaluation of 8 2-3 page papers on the readings, check that the readings have been done for the four remaining units (via 3-4 questions), quality of class participation (constructive, not domineering)
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Participation is mandatory. All the papers and answers have to be written in time before the corresponding session of the Guided Reading (electronic delivery to the instructors).
Constructive participation in the class discussion (15%)
8 2-3 page papers for 0-10 points = 80 points (12 possible such papers, you write 8)
Written proof of reading for the 4 other readings: 0 points (none or unconvincing), 1,5 (fine) or 3 (convincing) so 0-12 points
Papers handed late will be downgraded proportionally to belatedness (1 point per 3 hours); they will not be accepted after Midnight the day before class.
This all for a total of 107 points. The 107 instead of 100 is meant to reward discussion. Under 51/100 points is a fail (5), 51-62,5 is a 4, 63-74,5 is a 3, 75-87,5 is a 4, 88-105/107 is a 1 (A).

Prüfungsstoff
The official SPL definition of Guided readings does not allow exams or lengthy presentations, but regular writing exercises with feedback. An instructor who would organize the class otherwise would be in breach of regulations.
