Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course taught in English introduces key theories and methods of global history and global studies. It familiarizes students with different approaches in the field of global history and global studies as well as connections to other disciplines such as anthropology, geography or area studies. Its central premise is to rethink the present and futures of global history in 2023: what are the main achievements but also the main challenges and questions of this subdiscipline of history at our current moment in time? After establishing itself as a subdiscipline of history with its own journals, MA degrees and PhD programmes, global history is presently in the process of reflecting on its premises and foundations. Therefore, the aim of the seminar will be to rethink the theories and methods of global history in a practical manner. For this purpose, the seminar will provide the unique opportunity to attend the conference “Worlds Apart: Futures of Global History” held at the Weltmuseum Wien (25-26 May, https://ghconference.com). The course will be held in an experimental format, consisting of the discussion of readings, the attendance of an international conference on the topic and the application of theories and methods of global history to the students' individual research projects.
