Depending on the number of participants (the seminar room fits 20 students following the rules for social distancing), the course will take place in a hybrid form with a mix of on-site and online teaching. The first (06.10) and the last (26.01) sessions will be online for all. Students will be divided into two groups for all other sessions. Mandatory attendance on site in the seminar room is expected from each group alternately every two weeks, respectively mandatory monitoring of the session online when no attendance is required.
Mandatory attendance on site for group 1 (online presence for group 2): 13.10 / 27.10. / 10.11. / 24.11. / 12.01.
Mandatory attendance on site for group 2 (online presence for group 1): 20.10. / 03.11. / 17.11. / 01.12. / 19.01.
Should the general conditions change due to Covid-19, the course will continue online on the dates specified.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will introduce students to a broad range of aspects of the history of slavery in the Americas, such as: labour in the Atlantic world in early modern history, why African slavery in the Americas?, racism and slavery in early modern history, the Atlantic slave trade, the economy of slavery, the legal status of slaves, slave masters, women and the family in slavery, slave culture, slave resistance and rebellion, representations of slavery, the abolitionist movement, emancipation, life after slavery. Geographically, both North and South America as well as the Caribbean will be discussed. Due to the availability of key texts and sources in English, however, there will be a strong focus on slavery in the history of United States. Specific methods addressed in this course are text and discourse analysis as well as quantitative history, and image analysis.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students are expected to read all the assigned texts and will be assessed on the basis of short written assignments, their contribution to discussion in class, respectively in the forums available on Moodle, and a presentation. Students will receive feedback on Moodle for all the assignments and the presentation.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

requirements for passing the class:
- 7 written assignments (600-800 words each) (60 % of the final grade)
- a presentation (held in form of an audio or video presentation of c. 10 minutes length together with a fellow student) (25 % of the final grade,)
- active participation in discussions (15 % of the final grade)
- regular attendance (students may miss one class when mandatory attendance is required and one online session)
