070062 UE Guided Reading Osteuropäische Geschichte - History of Ukrainian lands, from Middle Ages to 1991 (2022W)

During the centuries of their history, the lands that currently constitute the territory of Ukraine have experienced a number of political regimes, foreign rules and international developments that have made an influence on the whole region of the Eastern Europe. This Guided Reading course shall be focused on the milestones of the Ukrainian history both from national and transnational perspective, studying it as a meeting point of various social, ethnical and cultural groups, as well as its place in European and world history.
After completing the course, the students should be able to define the key events and personalities of the Ukrainian history starting with the emergence of the Rus` state formations in 9th-10th centuries and ending with the proclamation of Ukrainian independence in 1991, as well as recognize the tendencies in the Ukrainian history and their similarities and differences with the simultaneous tendencies of the world history. To fulfill these goals, the students shall be regularly provided with the relevant research literature and/or written sources arranged both thematically and in chronological order. The texts shall then be discussed in large and small groups during the class. The students will be requested to submit 5 short summaries of the texts of their choice in preparation to the class.
