Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims to provide a synthetic overview of the diverse aspects of the urban history of Eastern Europe in the period between the Middle Ages and Modernity. It formulates a narrative exploring the process of cities’ evolution across the historical and geographic spectrum by focusing on key themes such as phases of development and patterns of urban growth; urban morphology and city planning; urban social fabric and occupational structure; cities’ relationship to the broader region. Working with a variety of literary, quantitative, and visual sources, the students will receive as well as reflect upon in individual case study projects a substantial vision of urban culture in Eastern Europe in the respective period.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance and active in-class participation based on the assigned reading material (secondary literature or primary sources) are required. In addition, one oral presentation and submission of a final seminar paper are also mandatory. Students will be guided in during the semester toward a suitable topic, composition, theoretical framework, and methodology for the seminar paper.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The submission of a final seminar paper is mandatory. The final grade consists of the following components:
- Regular attendance and participation in discussions (30%)
- Oral presentation (20%)
- Final seminar paper (50%)

Prüfungsstoff

This course has no final exam. Student evaluation and the final grade are based on the assignments during the semester
