Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Cities in Ottoman Europe: Historical Sources and Digital Tools is an undergraduate proseminar that explores the urban landscapes of Ottoman Europe through historical sources and digital methodologies. Students will examine the social, economic, and political structures of Ottoman cities, engaging with archival documents, maps, and travelers’ accounts to reconstruct urban life. The course introduces key historiographical debates while equipping students with digital tools such as GIS, text analysis, and database management to analyze historical data. By integrating traditional and computational approaches, students will gain a deeper understanding of Ottoman urbanism and develop skills relevant to both historical research and digital humanities.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance and active participation are crucial aspects of this undergraduate proseminar. Students are expected to arrive prepared, having thoroughly engaged with the assigned readings, which may include primary sources or scholarly secondary literature. The goal is to foster meaningful dialogue and encourage critical thinking during class discussions. In addition to participation, each student is required to deliver one oral presentation during the semester. The topic for this presentation will be chosen by the student in close consultation with the instructor. The presentation serves as a precursor to the final seminar paper, offering a preliminary exploration of the research, arguments, and insights that will be further developed in the written work. This presentation provides an opportunity for students to receive constructive feedback from both the instructor and their peers, helping to refine their arguments and methodological approaches before final submission. As a capstone project for the course, students must submit a final seminar paper. Throughout the semester, students will receive guidance in selecting an appropriate topic, identifying relevant literature, structuring their arguments, and developing a theoretical framework and methodology.
