Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Goals and contents: This module will introduce students to the history of the Habsburg Empire c. 1815-1918, taking a broad range of aspects into account, which include political, legal, cultural, economic, social, and gender history. We will discuss book chapters, research articles, and primary sources on topics ranging from the Metternich years, the revolutions of 1848/49, and the Compromise with Hungary to constitutionalism, nation-building and nationalism, parliamentarism and the development of mass political parties, women’s movements, minorities (in particular the Jewish population), economic and demographic developments, social policies, fin-de siècle culture, and finally World War I and the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students will be assessed on the basis of short written assignments, a presentation, and their contribution to discussion.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

requirements for passing the class:
- 8 written assignments (600-800 words each) (70 % of the final grade)
- 1 presentation (15 % of the final grade)
- active participation in discussion (15 % of the final grade)
- regular attendance (students may miss up to two classes)

74,99% - 63% 3
62,99% - 50% 4
